The tutelary deities of Latopolis seem to have been the triad – Khnum and Neith, and Heka their offspring. The view shows the ruins of the temple of Hermopolis which was dedicated to the Ibis-headed god. The emblems, the Ibis and the Cynocephalus or ape, are the most conspicuous among the sculptures upon the great portico of the temple. The view shows a reconstrucion of the small temple or Birth house described in the Antiquites. Opposite the large temple [of Horus] is another much smaller temple in a rather poorer state of preservation - the mammisi [Birth House]. The floral columns are crowned with sculptures of the god Bes, a disfigured domestic god considered the guardian of expectant mothers and newborn infants.
Since the scenes on the outside had been destroyed, the French artists executed an imaginary reconstruction of the temple with all the decoration typical of similar monuments. Good dark impression; some spotting mainly to margins, a few to image.

The view shows the ruins of the temple of Hermonthis.
The temple was dedicated to Menthu a god whose name means "nomad". Menthu was associated with raging bulls, strength and war. He was also said to manifest himself in a white bull with a black face, which was referred to as the Bakha. Egypt's greatest general-kings called themselves Mighty Bulls, the sons of Menthu. Good dark impression; generally clean; some spotting to margins; remains of glue and tissue guard to upper margin.

The view shows the ornate fountain erected to honour the deceased son of Muhammad 'Ali, Ahmad Tusun, a two-story kuttab flanks the sabil on either side. The image shows the busy life of the city.
The plates of the streets within Cairo are often the only records of the city at that time, as many of the buildings were demolished in the succeeding years.
Robert Hay much less famous than his fellow countryman and contemporary David Roberts nevertheless made the greater contribution to Egyptian Archaeology with his two expeditions of 1824-8 & 1829-34. Generally bright and clean, very light toning darker at edges of page; minor spots to blank margins; lithographers pinholes to corners of image, as usual.

The view shows the start of the aquaduct in Masr-el-Atee Kah or Old Cairo,[ also known as Misr al-Atiqah or Misr al-Qadimah] It is taken from across a branch of the Nile from the island of Rodah with various boats making their way along the river.

The view shows part of the exterior of the mosque of Tulun, with merchants and camels; the great minaret soaring above. Hay comments that " since these drawings were made the
mastabas have in many parts been pulled down."
