This scarce plate from van der Aa's monumental work is after the town plan of Olfert Dapper which appeared in 1688; with title in French added and engravers details to lower left corner.
The plate appears to have been re-engraved in some parts to bring out the deatils of the town which are often faded in the Dapper Clean & bright, dark impression with wide margins; centre fold; old ink number to lower right corner just outside printed area; Spot to upper left edge just touching plate mark.

Scarce Ornamental View of Iraklion.

The impressive view of Iraklion is surrounded by a decorative faux frame. Printed from two copper plates the upper half has an ornate garland with swags of leaves suspending an empty locket/frame [a portrait of Louis XIV was intended to be within the frame with his coat of arms suspended below from the small brass ring].
In the lower half a view of Iraklion from the sea with a key below to important edifices within the city. Good Impression, printed on thick laid paper; minor spotting, mainly to blank margins, a couple within the image; two short tears to right edge. {repaired with archival tape to verso].

The view/ map shows the fort Castel Belvedere or Kastelos ,built on the isolated hill Kastellos, that was accessible only from its south side, near the villages of Ano and Kato Kastelliana.
The castle dominated the western edge of Messara and was built by the Genoese pirate Pescatore between 1206-1210. During building, materials were extracted by the ancient town Priansos, which was built at the same position. The name Belvedere means good view, derived from the stunning views towards all directions. Dark impression, on laid paper; soiling to blank margins; light dampstain to edge of right blank margin.
