The Kri Kri or Cretan ibex is the only ibex or wild goat in Europe and a protected species endemic to Crete, possibly coming from Asia around 8000-7500BC
. To protect the remaining population the Samaria Gorge was declared a National Park in 1962.
There are also sancturies for them in Agias Theodoras and elsewhere on remote islets of Greece in an effort to protect the gene pool as they happily breed with domestic goats.
