Extremely scarce coloured lithograph from Théodore LE BLANC's Croquis d 'après nature faits pendat trois ans de sejour en Grèce et dans le Levant.[ plate 19] Original colour.
The lithograph shows"Vounisioi"(mountaineers), members of irregular troops of Mount Uludag (Olympus of Mysia), Bithynia. Evenly toned; printed on India paper mounted on heavy stock paper; damp stain to lower right corner of page [ far from image].

Théodore Leblanc (1800-1837)
Was a French soldier and painter, he visited Greece and the east for about 3 years between 1828 &1831, at the same period as the French Expédition scientifique de Morée, 1829-1830 though appears to have been working independently. He was be killed at Constantine whilst part of the French campaign to Algeria.
On returning from Greece he published the album Croquis d 'après nature faits pendat trois ans de sejour en Grèce et dans le Levant.with 30 plates without text

The French painter and officer Théodore Leblanc (1800? - 1837) stayed in Greece and the Levant for approximately three years, possibly from 1828 to 1831. Although he coincided in place and time with the French Scientific Expedition (1829-1830), his activity was independent to that of the mission. Leblanc drew from nature; his works are marked by caricaturesque elements but convey intense emotion. His paintings are extremely rare; apart from portraits they include scenes from the Greek War of Independence and snapshots from everyday life in the places he visited.
