The view from the bed of the Illisus river shows the temple of Olympian Zeus in the foreground with the Acropolis behind, showing the Parthenon.
It is believed the lithographs by Joly are inspired by the aquatints of of British writer and painter William. Haygarth published in his
Greece, a Poem, in three parts; with Notes, Classical Illustrations, and Sketches of the Scenery published 10 years earlier in 1814. Printed on India paper laid down with printed title below.
Alexis Victor Joly 1798-1874
French Painter and Lithographer. Pupil of P. Mougin, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1817-70 (paintings, drawings, lithographs). Specialised in landscapes, often entrusted the execution of the figures to V. Adam (q.v.) or Bayot.
