Stuart and Revett had not been permitted to survey the Acropolis until a few months before they left Greece, so perhaps it was a tribute to those who had finally given permission. The General View of Athens James Stuart & Nicholas Revett. James Basire Sculpt. "The General View of Athens" London John Haberkorn. 1762
Large copper engraved panoramic view of Athens from the first volume of Stuart & Revett's "Antiquities of Athens". engraved by James Basire.
This magnificent view engraved from sketches made by James Stuart during his and Nicholas Revett's surjourn in Athens 1751-55.

In the text Stuart tells us that the view is taken from the foot of Mount Anchesmus." a general view of Athens and the adjacent Country with the Saronic Gulf, the islands of Salamis and Ægina and the shores of the Peloponnesus from Corinth to Cape Scylleum.... The two columns on the fore ground are the Remains of a Building, called by Wheler and Spon the Aquaduct of Hadrian , tho' it seems to be the Front of a Reservoir, that supplied apart of Athens with Water."

Impressive Wall Map of Europe.

Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet Europe Carte D'Europe Divisee En ses Empires et Royaumes… Paris  Louis Joseph Mondhare. 1787
Original hand coloured copper engraved wall map of the Europe by Clouet; text in French and Spanish.

A large and impressively decorative wall map of Europe by Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet. Clouet's map covers all of Europe from Spain to the Ural Mountains and from Nova Zembla and the Arctic Ocean to North Africa, Turkey, and Persia. It includes the Black Sea, and adjacent parts of Asia. The map has a decorative border consisting of twenty vignettes illustrating important moments in European history as well as various monarchs. Beneath each vignette is a short paragraph of explanatory text in French and Spanish.

This map was issued on the cusp of world changing events. The American Revolution had just ended and by the end of the century would spread its egalitarian ideals to Europe - most specifically France. In the meantime Clouet paints a picture of Europe dominated by the remnants of feudalism. Kings in France, Spain, England, and Portugal, while central Europe remained a loose coalition under the Holy Roman Empire. Poland, though in longer period decline under the Commonwealth, still claimed vast expanses of territory from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Russia meanwhile was pushing across the continent as far as China and Siberia. Italy, though here color coded as a single country, was in fact an amalgam of independent princedoms, duchies, and republics. This largely untenable system would soon breakdown into the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars - the growing pains of a new world order. 4 sheets joined, linen backed, framed and glazed

Stobeaus: pp[20], 630, [31]. Text in double columns in Greek and Latin, historiated woodcut initials.
The second Gesner edition of Stobaeus' anthology of extracts from Greek authors.
The anthology is a very valuable collection of extracts from earlier Greek writers, which Stobaeus collected and arranged, in the order of subjects, as a repertory of valuable and instructive sayings. In most of the manuscripts there is a division into three books, forming two distinct works; the first and second books forming one work under the title Physical and Moral Extracts or Eclogues; the third book forming another work, called Florilegium or Sermones The extracts were intended by Stobaeus for his son Septimius, and were preceded by a letter briefly explaining the purpose of the work and giving a summary of the contents. It is evident from this summary, preserved in Photius's Bibliotheca (9th century), that the work was originally divided into four books and two volumes, and that surviving manuscripts of the third book consist of two books which have been merged.

The Spice Islands

Die Inseln Mollucae Johann Janssonius. "N. Visscher excudit." "Die Inseln Mollucae" "Insularum Moluccarum Nova Descriptio." Amsterdam. J. Janssonius. 1649
Copper engraved map of the Spice Islands, the Moluccas by Janssonius. from " Nouvus Atlas, Das ist: Wetbeschreibung.. " Vol 3. black & white ; German text to verso.
The map shows the "Spice" or North Maluku islands with details of the plantations and the forts of Tabillola, Mauritius, Nassau and Malayo established by the Dutch after they had expelled the Portuguese in the seventeenth century
Large decorative title cartouche supported by dolphins; scale with strapwork surround; 2 compasses roses and numerous ships and monsters to sea; 2 natives stand in the lower right corner.

The Indonesian archipelago of the Moluccas (or Maluku Islands), commonly referred to as the Spice Islands, lies on the equator north of Australia and west of New Guinea. Though there are hundreds of islands in the group (most are very small), only a handful figure prominently in the history of the European spice trade, including today's Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Makian, and Bacan—essentially the ones shown on the map. Until the 1700s, these rain-forested, luxuriant, volcanic islands were the only or best sources of such spices as cloves, nutmeg, and mace.
Arab traders introduced cloves to Europeans around the fourth century but sought to keep their sources secret. Their monopoly was broken by the Portuguese after Vasco da Gama's voyage to India around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497. The Portuguese strengthened their stranglehold on the spice trade during the sixteenth century, when they found the central locus of the spices to be these islands. One of the native traditions was to plant a clove tree when a child was born, linking the child symbolically to the life of the tree. When the Dutch took over control of the Moluccas in the seventeenth century, they eradicated the clove trees from all the islands except Amboina (and a few adjacent islands) in order to enforce the spice's scarcity, keeping prices high. As a result, cloves were worth more than their weight in gold. However the Dutch tactic also instilled hatred and fomented rebellion among the islanders. Gradually, the spice was cultivated in other places of the world, like Brazil, the West Indies, and Zanzibar, reducing prices and making the commodity more available. Good impression; lightly toned as so often with Janssonius' maps; slight show through of text from verso.

The Anglo Saxon Heptarchy.

Great Britain. Johann Janssonius. "N. Visscher excudit." Great Britain. "Britannia prout divisa suit temporibus Anglo- Saxonum, præsertim durante illorum Heptarchia.." Amsterdam. J. Janssonius. 1649
Copper engraved map of the Anglo Saxon Heptarchy by Janssonius. from "Le Nouveau Theatre Du Monde Ou Nouvel Atlas " Vol black & white ;F rench text to verso.

This highly decorative map by Jansson shows the British Isles at the time of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy; the seven ancient kingdoms of Kent, the South Saxons, West Saxons, East Saxons, Northumberland, East Anglia and Mercia
The map is embellished with border panels depicting the seven kings in full battle dress & armor, and with scenes illustrating the conversion of each of the seven kingdoms to Christianity in wake of St. Augustine's arrival in England in the year 597 A.D.
Based on the map by John Speed, both Blaeu (1645) and Janssonius (1646) produced the map for their atlases of the British Isles. Janssonius' edition can be distinguished from Blaeu's by the addition of radiating compass lines to the sea. Good dark impression; lightly toned as so often with Janssonius' maps; scattered foxing/ spotting , darker in places; small worm hole to centre of map at centre fold
The map has been trimmed to plate mark and stuck down to the page, covering the map "Anglia Regnum" obviously a mistake of the printer , who had already printed the letterpress to the verso; [ this can be seen as the map has become loose at upper right]. Un restored.
