We have been unable to identify the source of this fine view of the port of Algiers. It shows the city from the sea with numerous ships in the foreground, engaged in an exchange of fire.
Algiers was bombarded during the 1680s in an attempt to rid the Mediterranean of the Barbary pirates.
Enclosed in an engraved frame the title within an ornate cartouche decorated with seashells Further decorative swags of seashells either side. Good impression, folded; slight split at top and bottom of fold.

The map first appeared in Schenk and Valk's "
Atlantis Sylloge Compendiosa," c.1702; it shows the whole Greek peninsular and the Aegean with the coast of Asia Minor and the adjoining countries to the North. The territories of Greece and Albania, Macedonia and the Islands with full wash colour. Major towns heightened with red. Good dark impression with bright original full wash colour; occasional offset of colour; two old ink numbers to blank margins.
The maps of Schenk and Valk are famous for their full wash colour, however often the pigments, particularly in the greens deteriorated leading to browning and eventually causing the paper to crack, for this reason it is unusual to see such bright original colour.

The map shows North Eastern Asia from the Caspian sea to the Pacific. In the South the area covering the modern countries of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan across Northern India and Bangladesh to China, Taiwan and Japan; whilst to the North, parts of Russia, Kazakstan across to Mongolia and Manchuria. The Great wall of China is clearly shown. Korea is cartographically correct as a peninsular but Sakhalin Island is missing or is included in the sketchy outlines of Yedso shown according to the voyages of De Vries.
[Ezo, Yezo or Yeso is a Japanese name which historically referred to the lands to the north of Japan. It was used in various senses, sometimes meaning the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, and sometimes meaning lands and waters further north in the Sea of Okhotsk, like Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.] Good impression; light toning to extreme edges; tiny hole to centre of centrefold; old strengthening to verso of centrefold and old ink numbers.
